Welcome
Welcome
My name is Justin Mockler and I'm a recent graduate of the University of Rhode Island. I graduated with my Bachelor of Arts as a double major in Computer Science and Writing & Rhetoric in May 2010. This fall, I will be attending the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York to work on my master's degree in Human-Computer Interaction. This portfolio is a collection of both my past and present work in my areas of interest, which is updated often to reflect my many projects. Below is a detailed description of how I got started in the field of web-design and why I have recently decided to turn this hobby into my career.

Visiting the University of Maine.

I'm a web developer.

Throughout my undergraduate study at the University of Rhode Island, especially in Writing & Rhetoric, the main focus was always on constructing our identity for after we leave the institution. For the longest time I never consided myself a web developer. I started working on websites back in April 2001 when I signed on as a co-webmaster of a gaming website purely as a hobby, but soon I became involved in the design process of many other sites through their affiliates. This was all because of Jeremy Stumbaugh, a freelance designer from Missouri, allowed me to work alongside him on many projects and use his server space. I can't remember the exact moment where developing websites turned from being a hobby to my current career focus, but the fact it was a seamless transition makes me comfortable in my career choice.

Although I took a break recently to focus on more programming in Java and C#, I'm currently looking to advance my skills even further in web programming ahead of starting my master's program at the Rochester Institute of Technology. Thank you for taking the time to browse through my portfolio and please free feel to contact me with any suggestions you have the pages. If you're looking for someone to start up a new project with or need help on a current project, then please use the contact page to get in touch with me. Like I stated before, I'm always looking for new projects that I can become involved in especially with summer break approaching.

- Justin

Current Web Projects
Below are all the web projects that I am currently involved in. All of these projects are currently in the process of being finished, so many of them do not include any sample images. In the future, I will be including mockups on this page along with the description of the project. If you would like to get in touch with me about any of my projects, please use the contact page. Feel free to also send me a request if you think I could help out with any of your own projects, since I'm always looking for new collaborations and interesting projects to take on.
Translucid Dreams
Translucid Dreams is a band consisting of James Groziak (DJ) and Chris Groziak (Guitar) from East Greenwich, Rhode Island. Their influences include Nine Inch Nails, Tiesto, Paul Oakenfold, Aphex Twin, and Radiohead. They are looking for a basic website where people will be able to sample some of their songs, purchase their album, and to contact them about potential shows. Right now I'm in the process of collecting biographical information and will start designing some mockups in the next couple of weeks.

FikeMeeney Productions
FikeMeeney Productions is a freelance video production company that services Rhode Island and surrounding areas. They offer full scale video productions including filming and post production editing for print to DVD or internet ready. Right now, this project is on hold because Mike is currently training to join the National Guard. Right now I'm just working on concepts for the site, which I will show to him when he comes back in about one month. From there, the project will take off quickly due to the simple nature of what he wants to display on his portfolio.

Past Web Projects
This page is a collection of all my previous projects that I've worked on recently. I've included a short description of the project and some snapshots of the work that I completed. Since these are past projects I'm no longer involved in, the photo gallery in the section below the project description will be the best representation of the work I completed at the time. In the sidebar, I've listed links to the software tools I used to complete these projects with links to their official website and download links (if available).
Academic Roadmap
This project introduces simple, cost-effective, and efficient Web-based roadmaps for informing, guiding and advising students and their families along the educational and early-career continuum. These roadmaps are intended to convey an institution's intentional academic scaffolding of expectations for student learning; sequenced courses and programs of study; and ultimate outcomes. The goals of this project are to improve student recruitment and retention and to empower student learning by creating better communication and advising tools that render the higher education enterprise "transparent" for learners and their families.

URI Writing & Rhetoric Program
Writing & Rhetoric majors at URI work with a nationally-respected faculty, teacher-scholars as active in the discipline as we are in our classrooms. As a Writing & Rhetoric major at URI, a student will practice writing in a wide range of settings. Their small classes are designed with active participation in multiple writing situations, from working with real-world clients to composing descriptive informational cards for museum exhibits. Students will learn to collect information, conduct research, compose, analyze, and revise texts of many kinds. They will learn how to design brochures and web pages and present visual information effectively.

Heaven's Rogues
The Heaven's Rogues (COHR) was founded in April 2001 on Phantasy Star Online by four brothers in St. Louis, Missouri. Since then, COHR has expanded into many different online games and has improved the gaming experience for all of their members. They hold official events often and help their members with collecting items, give gaming tips, and just be there to chat. They have been active for over eight years and many of their members have been there since the start.

Break the Dark
* This project was not fully completed due to the band breaking up.

Break the Dark is an edgy, progressive, and melodic rock band that has built its very core on the chemistry and creativity of its components. For this project, I am redesigning their MySpace profile due to the imminent release of their brand new EP "For Those Forgotten."

Programming Projects
Although most of my work is focused on building websites, I also program applications that are usually focused on my hobbies. Below are all the current programming projects I'm involved with. Unlike most of the web projects I have listed on this portfolio, all of these are independent projects I'm working on in my spare time that are not requested by a client. When these applications are completed, I will release the source code for the program at the same time because I'm not planning on developing them commercially.
Retail Nightmare
Retail Nightmare was a Java adventure game I created for my introductory programming class at the University of Rhode Island. Since that class was over three years ago, I've gained much more programming experience and will be able to do a much better job of creating a better game experience. I've taken the fundamentals of the game and expanded on them in order to create an engaging RPG. It revolves around a newly hired retail employee learning how to balance the relationship between customers, co-workers, and management. I'm doing this in my free time, so it won't be complete for a while. If you'd like to see an early build of it, then please get in contact with me.

Dreamweaver is a great program for seasoned developers, since it is very powerful with great features. However, it's not the easiest program for beginners learning how to code and design a website. After seeing many of the shortcomings of the program in the class I assist for this semester, I learned exactly how new designers believe a coding program should act. This project aims to create a basic HTML editor with standard features and embedded tutorials directly in the program. Although there are programs out there that offer this functionality, I'm also taking on this project to learn my way around Visual Studio 2010 and get a better feel for the C# programming language.

Please use the form below to get in touch with me, since it will automatically forward your request to my personal e-mail address. If you need any assistance with the coding or high-level decisions of a design project, I would be happy to assist as long as the project timeline doesn't conflict with anything else I'm working on. Although I prefer e-mail, I've also listed some other ways of contacting me over on the right side of the page including my social networking profiles. Thanks in advance for taking the time to contact me.
